Embracing digital transformation at YVR with an FME solution
Vancouver International Airport (YVR), one of the busiest airports in North America, has taken a significant leap with its ambitious digital twin project. Their goal was to improve passenger experience and logistics and lead innovation outside of aviation, and FME played an integral role in the project’s success.
Confronted with managing an extensive range of data, from GIS information to the complexities of its infrastructure, YVR’s IT management group sought innovative solutions for real-time data handling at the airport. FME emerged as a critical tool in this transformation, allowing YVR to translate GIS information into various formats seamlessly. A key example is facilitating LiDAR data translation of Sea Island, where YVR is located, bringing the team vital insights into airport operations.
Advancing YVR’s airport operations with FME-enabled digital twin
FME has helped YVR push the boundaries of traditional airport operations, including through real-time data integration, enabling YVR to develop APIs for real-time tracking of maintenance reports, work orders, and passenger movements. They also enhanced their asset management, gaining deeper insights into assets, from the number of streetlights to necessary infrastructure updates. The team is also empowered to eliminate data silos and foster a more comprehensive approach to data management.
YVR has streamlined operations and significantly enhanced the passenger experience. By leveraging real-time data and digital modeling, YVR has set a new standard in airport management and operational efficiency. YVR continues to explore new ways to leverage FME for further advancements and is working towards other 3D projects and translating data from their indoor mapping into different formats for the digital twin application. Their innovative projects stand as a testament to the transformative power of FME in redefining the future of airport operations.
