FME in Action Customer Stories Athena Intelligence uses data integration to manage supply chain risk

Athena Intelligence uses data integration to manage supply chain risk

Athena Intelligence uses FME to combine datasets of land, food, water, and energy to maximize food supply chains and resources.

Athena Intelligence provides dynamic business intelligence to the food supply network and associated stakeholders. This includes everything from food production, processing and manufacturing companies to environmental groups, grocery chains and financial institutions. They take a staggering amount of natural resource data and combine it with information from their customers’ supply chain and processing facilities – providing real, up-to-date, and actionable data which helps their customers identify opportunities and manage risks within their supply chain.

100+ disparate data formats

The data comes in hundreds of different formats, including geospatial, satellite imagery, private data, Excel spreadsheets, etc. Individually, each dataset has value, but Athena Intelligence knew that if they could integrate the data and visualize it in a business intelligence platform, they could discover new insights and untapped solutions that offer large commercial value.

Athena Intelligence had all the data they needed for integrating into Tableau; but the problem was data blending and transformation.

Trying to pull together hundreds of disparate datasets was frustrating, and Athena Intelligence feared the only answer would be to build a myriad of database scripts. They needed a better solution.

“Tableau makes data beautiful, FME gets data to the point where it can be made beautiful. FME is the secret sauce.”

Leveraging spatial data to deliver new insights and solutions

Athena Intelligence used FME to prepare the data for Tableau. They used out-of-the-box transformers in FME’s visual interface to build workflows that integrate and massage data from disparate sources, including Esri Shapefile, KML, GeoTIFF, CSV Excel, and more.

Customers can now interact with the aggregated information to display business intelligence. They can easily assess variables like surface water and groundwater availability, crop quality, producer performance, and harvest yields. Equipped with this valuable information, they can identify and retain top producers, secure valuable assets first, and take steps to head off possible risks. New information is revealed by tapping into spatial data and bringing together previously unconnected datasets.

FME speeds the process of on-boarding and investment, and Athena plans to apply FME Flow Hosted in the future to automate data loading on a scheduled basis.
